Find Your Perfect Job

Pamela Harrison

Finding your perfect job is easy!

The hard part is deciding what that perfect job or career is.

Let's look at where you are now: What's happening in your career, are you happy, challenged, excited, and passionate?

If not, why not? Write these issues down.

Do these issues present instances where you find it hard to discover a good reason to leap out of bed and get to work?

My observation is that many of us stay in jobs where we are unhappy. The reasons we furnish for staying are many:

  • Fear of change
  • The money's great
  • I don't have to think
  • It's close to home
  • I'll just stay another year

The list goes on ... How many people do you know who dislike their job or boss, or constantly complain or gossip about the people they work with, or customers or ...?

What might motivate you to start looking for your perfect job?

  • If I don't start getting real I'll stay stuck and unhappy
  • I know I can contribute so much more
  • I'm weary of being good at a mediocre job, I want to be challenged and grow.

My belief is that life is too short to be stuck doing something that we either don't like or doesn't stretch us. Don't get me wrong, there are times in life where we do have to knuckle down and get a job done for a variety of reasons. I'm talking about when you are ready, willing and able to make clear decisions about where to from here in your career.

What tools may assist you on the pathway to finding your perfect job?

Here's a suggestion:
Buy the weekend papers and focus on the job sections. Cut out anything (no judgement) that sparks your interest. It might also be an advertised career course.

Sort your clippings into similar opportunities. Can you see a pattern emerging? Pick out the job/s in each category that most attract your interest. What are the defining attractions of each?

Okay! You have a clear idea of what attracts you. What are you going to do about it?

It's time to start searching for a career that fulfils your underlying passion.

And, if you find yourself resisting the need to sit with the questions to find your answers, enlist the help of a friend, colleague, or family member to ask them of you.

It's time to explore - enjoy!

Note to friend, colleague, or family member: Ask the question; wait for the answer - perhaps write it down. BUT do not offer advice, opinions, or conversation. NOTHING! Your job is to let someone you care about find their own answers - after all, it's their life and career.
